Artist's Comments

Right, so I decided that I felt like doing a digital painting. I'm thinking of joining the HARPG here on dA and if I did, I would want to breed Arabians, particularly those with Spanish lines. I also decided that I wanted to give it Sabino markings, which are quite common in Arabs.

So I started painting. It's maybe a third of the way through at the moment. As you can see, there's a lot still to do - the body needs to be detailed more, and even the head still needs work, especially on the nostrils.

But I'd be really keen to get your feedback on what I have so far :)

I'll also be doing a walkthrough based on this painting - I've been regularly saving my progress as .jpgs to throw into a walkthrough.

This pic doesn't have any individual references. I did stare at quite a few conformation shots of arabians, and also looked at a few hundred photos of markings, but nothing was used enough to need referencing :)

This is looking really nice so far. I absolutely love the way that the shades of chestnut work together, and the shadowing is very precise. What also makes the coloring and shading work together is the way that the white on the horse has a sort of chestnut hue.

On the overall body of the horse, I would suggest fleshing the barrel out a little more. On the back legs, I think that making the hocks and fetlocks a little more pronounced would give the animal a slightly more realistic appearance.

Very nice job on the dish in the horse's face. I find Arabians difficult to draw because of that very reason, but it looks good here. ;) Once more, wonderful on the shading, can't wait to see the finished product! :D

The shoulders/chest area is looking a little light, either that or the rump looks a little large. It may also be worth refining the far side back leg, the curve on the stifle-hock area looks... too curved? I would also suggest narrowing the cannon bone area, specifically on the front legs. Arabs have quite fine bones. There's something about the neck that is looking a little off still, it may have something to do with the join to the head, a little deep, mebies?

The colouring is looking really good, and I love the markings. You've got a good definition on the muscles and tendons on there, and the eye looks really soft and gentile. It's looking really good.

Hola there !

I have to say it's very pretty (actually I'm quite blown away). Are you using a graphical tablet or are you using a mouse ? Either way it looks very nice so far.

The muscle seems to be fleshed out really well in the head area. However the head itself seems to be slightly small or it might just be the neck elevation.

Keep it up !

Hm. His legs look a bit.. chunky? Short, maybe? I don't know; not quite right. And maybe the top of his butt needs to be a bit flatter for the pose :p

And something with the head - slightly proportionally too big? I can't tell!

<3 otherwise :)

The torso is a little slim, and the ears are very small, but apart from that it's great! The shading is really pretty too.

My Critique:

Personally, I think it looks great so far, but there are a few things you could improve on. First off, I love the detail in the face, but you could add some more refined shading around and inside the nostril. Maybe make the inside of the nostril darker. The ears seem a tad bit misshapen, although I'm not quite sure why...

The muscle shading on the legs so far is so smooth and wonderful! The only thing I'd change about the legs is that I'd extend the hoofs down more. The height of the hooves seems too short. The back left leg needs tweaking-seems a bit too pudgy at the top...

Lastly, the neck seems a tad too long, but some Arabs do have long necks. So, maybe once you get the rest of the shading done, it won't seem so long.

I love it though! Keep up the great work! If you do join HARPG, I'd love to hear b/c I might be interested in a breeding, since I have realistic horses as well. :)

Thanks for the feedback :D

I'm using a graphics tablet for this, because digital painting and drawing with a mouse is pure hell! I'm using a barely-working wacom graphire 4 tablet. I own a lovely wacom intuos but my sister =ninykinin has it. Her tablet is the one I'm using, because it stopped working one day and she needs a reliable tablet because she's a graphic design student and has no money, plus assignments to do whereas I'm a hobbyist :)

Interesting thought about the head size. As I was sketching, I grabbed a few different side-on shots of arabs and overlayed to see if I had the general proportions right. On quite a few of them, the head was smaller! I was a bit surprised as well because I thought the head on this was barely large enough. I'm assuming it still looks slightly too small because there's no mane/forelock yet to add some body.

Hehe. I know what you mean with the legs. I've already slimmed the fetlocks down quite a bit. Another commenter suggested the hooves are too short. I agree. They were slightly longer (especially on the front) but didn't look right when I just had the colour blocked in. NOw there's colour and shading on them, they do look too small again. I think if I lengthen the hooves, they'll make the rest of the legs look slimmer.

The head is proportional. Someone else thought it was too small. I measured it against a few different arabian pics to makes sure the proportions were right as I was sketching, and this head was about in the middle. There were some heads that were shorter, and some that were longer. I think it's the lack of mane/forelock messing with our perceptions.

I agree with the butt comment! I think with the leg stretched back like that, the topline should be straighter. I'll fix it as I go on, thanks for pointing it out. I might not have realized otherwise!

Hehe. Arabs ears are often surprisingly tiny in comparison to other breeds. I checked both the ear and torso sizes in comparison with other more lightly-built arabs and they're on the mark. Which surprised me. Normally I draw more chunky horses such as Andalusians and they have massive chests and torso's!

Even so, I might make the chest on either side of the front legs a little larger. This arab is definitely on the more slender-built side, even for arabs.
